How to remove a background

  1. Upload a photo with a flat, single-colour background.
  2. Leave "Auto" selected to sample the four corners, or choose "Click on image" and click directly on the backdrop.
  3. Adjust the tolerance slider — higher removes more of an uneven backdrop, lower protects fine detail on the subject.
  4. Press Remove background and download the transparent PNG.

Frequently asked questions

Does this work on any photo?

It works best on photos with a single flat, even-coloured background, like passport or ID photos shot against a plain wall or backdrop. It's not designed for complex, busy backgrounds.

What does the tolerance slider do?

It controls how close a pixel's colour must be to the sampled background colour to be removed. Raise it for a shadowed or uneven backdrop; lower it if parts of the subject are being erased.

What format is the downloaded file?

A transparent PNG, so the removed background shows as transparent wherever you place the image.
